“Data Science: Tips for Success!” featuring MoneySuper Market

In the heart of Bloomsbury, London on a hot, balmy summer evening, MBN delivered its latest thought leadership event.

With an assembled audience of around 70 business leaders and Data Science / Analytics professionals, Paul Forrest, MBN’s Chairman introduced our guest speaker for the evening, Dr Orlando Machado, Chief Data Scientist at MoneySupermarket.com.  Orlando delivered a sharp and insightful presentation at the event and this lead to an engaging panel Q&A session at the end of the presentation where Orlando was joined by Paul Forrest and also by Steve Miles who heads up ACS Consulting’s Big Data offerings.  Orlando, Steve and Paul fielded questions ranging from technical through to RoI and research based subjects in what proved to be one of our best panel sessions yet.

Orlando covered a range of key subjects, elaborating on the ways in which data helps us understand customers as individuals, so we can interact with them more effectively. He also went on to dispel a common misconception, suggesting there is in fact no conflict between data and creativity – companies need to do both, and it’s important for data scientists to engage with the whole organisation, not just technicians. Overall, his keynote articulated how data science allows companies to innovate and protect competitive advantage, and crucially he argued that at the heart of this are great data scientists that hit the ‘sweet spot’ of technical, commercial and communication skills.
