Scotland Data Science & Technology Meetup – Scottish Water & Kx Systems

Brilliant start to Glasgow’s first SDST Meetup of 2018. Thank you to those who attended, we hope you enjoyed your night.

Special thanks to our speakers Robert Murray & Kris McCracken.

Our first speaker was Robert Murray; Head of Asset Intelligence at Scottish Water. Robert holds a PhD in machine learning from the University of Edinburgh. Over the past ten years he has established and grown Scottish Water’s in-house Analytics Team to a leading position within the industry. The models that he and his team have developed from scratch significantly influence over £1.8 billion of capital investment across Scotland.

Last night he discussed the role of analytics in asset management – A Scottish Water story.

Our second speaker was Kris McCracken; Software Engineer, Kx Systems.

Kx Systems are the founders of the world’s fastest time series database – kdb+ – as well as the ‘q’ query language it is written in. kdb+ is a high-performance, high-volume database designed as a solution to Big Data problems.

Kris spoke about how to use a relation time-series and columnar database as well as a tightly integrated query language capable of doing aggregations and consolidations on billions of streaming and real time historical records.
