MBN were proud to support Cancer Innovation Challenge Data Dive.
This event brought together entrepreneurially minded data scientists and analysts, clinicians, designers, and software engineers. They spent 3 days and 3 nights side by side developing data focused projects to improve cancer care in the NHS in Scotland.
Small cross-funcational teams worked together on a product prototype with support from subject matter experts and the wider technology community.

This inspiring event allowed participants to develop their careers, gain new skills, network with professionals, meet with potential employers or even gave the opportunity to kick-start their own company whilst working on an important subject that affects many lives.

Well done to everyone who innovatively used data science solutions to improve cancer care. Congratulations to the winners - OIMK Cancer with their product Prognict.

It was great to attend this brilliant event and MBN are always delighted and proud to support a great initiative like Cancer Data Dive.

JP Morgan Innovation Week

It was great to see so many people attend the JP Morgan Innovation Week on Tuesday. Thanks to JP Morgan for allowing SDST to be part of their innovation week! It was a fantastic event for networking with other local group members.
Thank you to our presenters Robert Hamlet, Peter Henriksen, Cynthia More; University of Stirling and Steven Faull; Aggreko.

The first presentation was from the winners of the inaugural Data Lab MSc Challenge Competition. Robert, Cynthia and Peter talked us through their reasons for choosing their project, the initial design, data and business challenges they faced and the methodologies they used to design their solution to the problem.
The second presentation was from Steven; Manager at Aggreko. His presentation discussed how a collaborative, innovative and pragmatic approach to data science delivers results.

We hope everyone enjoyed the presentations as much as we did.

Data Scientist 2.0, who they are?
And how we placed 50 in Scotland for The Data Lab.

Increasingly fast moving, transformational businesses require key staff with data science and analytics skills. Today, we are seeing this spread even more to traditional businesses.  As we see new approaches to data enabled business and decision making, together with the increase in high quality insight and analytics tools, it is clear that data has a pivotal role to play in enhancing the prospects of commercial and organisational success.

However, this won’t happen in isolation and without the skills necessary to wrangle, govern and exploit the data, we’re left with little more than an IT enabled filing cabinet.  But what of these skills?

Can we meet the demand? The current shortage of skills globally demonstrates that business as-usual strategies won’t satisfy the growing need. If we are to unlock the promise and potential of data and all the technologies that depend on it, employers and educators will have to transform. But so do candidates, and that’s where we at MBN come in!

Late last year, MBN Solutions competed in open tender and were selected as partners by Scotland’s Data Lab to deliver their MSc. Placement Project – a project specifically focused on looking at the intersection of the skills needed by business, by candidate data scientists and those taught by academia.

The Data Lab is a government funded Innovation Centre. Its core mission is to generate significant economic, social and scientific value from data. As part of this mission, the Data Lab funds eligible students through their MSc. Courses at a variety of Scottish Universities. These courses are handpicked as representing the pinnacle of data science technical and related business skills to help prepare students for real world assignments. As part of these courses, students are offered the opportunity to participate in 10 to 12 week long Industrial Placements – giving them real-time and real life exposure to commercial Data Science challenges at a variety of Scottish businesses.

Having placed nearly 50 such data scientists, we’re now in a position to reflect on our experiences here and what that means for Employers, Data Scientists and for the Academic realm of Data Science.

26 mile hike through the
Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond!

Massive congratulations are in order to Lauren Marshall!

Celebrating her Mum’s all clear from breast cancer, she set herself a challenge to raise £1,000 for Cancer 2017.

Having completed the 14mile Kilt Walk back in April, her last challenge was on Saturday – Macmillan 26 mile Big Hike!

After 13 hours of fighting off midges, battling the weather and intense hiking…

Lauren commented;
“It was so much harder than expected, both physically and mentally and the pain was (and still is) incredibly bad."

This has been a brilliant achievement for Lauren as she endured a lot of training and placed herself out of her comfort zone.

She smashed her target raising over £1,000.

Congratulations Lauren!

This requires us to have an in depth knowledge and appreciation for the sectors and skill areas in which we operate.

Our thought leadership can be seen on our website, but it is the compilation of such commentary that allows us to share our unique insight. MBN decided in 2012 to launch a series of regular events where we invite industry leaders, clients and interested parties to share an evening of networking, presentations and general insight into the areas of our subject matter expertise, namely, Technology, Data Science & Analytics and Digital Initiatives.
